CN Power is traveling to Fort Wayne, Indiana this weekend to take on the Fort Wayne Derby Girls Bomb Squad! Wear pink and wish them luck!

Saturday, 18/FEB:
Our trademark announcer Crankypants is throwing the second annual Remember Love 2: A Fundraiser for the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic on this day at the Garrison in Toronto. There will be live music and door prizes; minimum $5 donation upon entry. The Barbra Schlifer Clinic is a free counselling, legal, interpretation, information and referral service for women survivors of violence. More details about the event can be found on it’s Facebook page. A message from Cranky himself about the event:

This is a cause close to my heart. On Saturday, February 18 at The Garrison (1197 Dundas Street West, just west of Ossington), a few of us are spearheading the second annual Remember Love: A Fundraiser for the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic. I initiated the first event a year ago after being fed up with violent acts against women I know, and I wanted to find a positive way of dealing with that.

Doors will open at 9 p.m., with music starting at 10 p.m. from Beams, the Dani Nash Band and more. There will be prize raffles at the event, including contributions from several Canadian roller derby leagues including Toronto Roller Derby. The night is intended to be one of community good times and support for the Clinic, which assists 4000 abused women in Toronto each year with legal, language, housing and counselling services. Last year’s fundraiser drew in close to $2000, which the Clinic used to provide TTC tokens for women who need the Clinic’s services.

One hundred percent of the money raised will go to the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic. For more information on the Clinic, you can reach its website at http://www.schliferclinic.com. There is also an option there to donate online. Whether you can make it that night or not, I would greatly appreciate if you could pass the word on to everybody.

This will be a special night. Thank you, everyone, for your support.

Friday, 24/FEB:
Hit up the El Mocambo on Friday Feb 24th for the Gore Gore Rollergirls fundraiser!

Featuring bands Unbelievers and Pkew Pkew Pkew, a photobooth, and Gore-made goodies!. Doors are at 10pm and tickets are $10. Hit up the Facebook event for more details.

Wednesday, 29/FEB:
Did the Deadly Viper Assassination squad steal your heart at the ToRD season
opener February 4th? Did they body-slam the still-beating organ from your chest
and skate away with lightening speed and agility? Come out to the Bovine Sex Club February 29th to support your local ToRD farm team. There will be live music from killer local bands, prizes, games, and of course, your charming hostesses for the night, the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad. Hit up the Facebook event page for more details.

Saturday, 03/MAR:
DOUBLE HEADER and the other other season opener! Home teams the Death Track Dolls and the Smoke City Betties hit the flat track for a furious bout, sure to make the crowd go wild. But that’s not all! Preceeding that bout, CN Power will play their first home bout of 2012 against the visiting Roc City. Doors at 5, CN Power bout at 6, Death Track Dolls & Smoke City Betties after (around 8).

Tickets are on sale now; don’t delay, buy in advance! Our season opener sold out at the door, and it really sucks to travel all the way to Downsview Park and not be able to get in. We’d LOVE to let you all in, but there are these tiny things called fire code regulations that sometimes get in the way. Have you heard about our new Youth pricing? Youth aged 10 – 15 pay only 12$ for a ticket at the door! Kids 9 and under are still free with paying adult.

Friday, 16/MAR: The Smoke City Betties are throwing a fundraiser at the Flying Beaver, with karaoke and tons of prizes to be won! More details to follow.

UPDATE: The Chicks Ahoy fundraiser has been rescheduled, stay tuned for more details!

DVAS win, Chicks edge victory over Gores

It was a sold out house that welcomed Toronto Roller Derby to 2012, with two close bouts that kept fans on the edge of their seats!

The night kicked off with a showcase of Toronto Roller Derby farm team talent: DVAS red vs. DVAS black. Skaters were well divided amongst the team, as the score was tight throughout the bout. Each time one team pulled ahead, the other team would quickly respond with several points of their own. For many of the skaters, this was the first official bout they ever skated in, and everyone’s confidence and skill grew as the game progressed. Great job DVAS!

Final Score: DVAS red 61, DVAS black 59.

During the intermission between bouts, the Cowgirl Choir entertained the crowd of over 1000 with an excellent half hour set, and then sang our national anthem to kicked off the first house team bout of 2012. Last meeting at the 2011 Battle for the Boot, the Chicks Ahoy and the Gore Gore Rollergirls were both itching for the win. The atmosphere in The Bunker was thick with excitement at what was assumed to be an epic bout – and the crowds were not dissapointed.

There were no pulled punches in this bout: if you came to see hard hitting roller derby, that is exactly what was delivered. Both teams are well known for excellent jammers and very powerful blockers; both talents were plentiful on Saturday night. The first points went to the Chicks Ahoy, a grand slam by Dyna Hurtcha in the first jam of the night. Not to be outdone, the Bambi of the Gores responded with 16 points on the next jam. The lead would trade a few times before hitting the end of the first half with a score of 79 – 35 for the Chicks Ahoy.

Renewed after halftime, both teams hit the track to continue the vicious battle that had begun an hour previously. Both teams capitalized on full penalty benches to raise their scores; 2011 fan favorite Mega Bouche of the Chicks Ahoy was ejected halfway through the second half. A nail-biter of a last jam saw the Gores take lead jammer status while the Chicks jammer was held trapped in the pack, but the jam was called off and the clock ran down.

Final Score: Chicks 137, Gores 124.

If you missed the bout, you can hit up Layer9 to watch HD footage of the action.

What a great start to the season! Tickets to our next game on March 3rd are on sale now online, and will be in stores soon. Be sure to buy your tickets in advance to guarantee entry to the bout! The March 3rd bout will see the all star CN Power take on Roc City, followed by the Death Track Dolls vs. the Smoke City Betties.

Following this bout, 2011′s finalists the Gore Gore Rollergirls will challenge the 2011 champions, the Chicks Ahoy, in a rematch of last years Battle for the Boot. These two teams have been trading victories back and forth since 2007; who will win this time? Find out first by getting in on the action!

Tickets are on sale now online, and will be in stores shortly (see tickets page for in-store outlets – we added a new one in the east!). Head on over to the Tickets page to learn more. Individual bout tickets are 12$ in advance, and 18$ at the door, so buy early and save!

If you’ve never seen roller derby before, now’s a great time to check it out! In the break between the two bouts, your brain will have a chance to process the awesome insanity you just saw, and by the second bout you’ll have adapted and be hooked on the action. Chat to the stranger sitting beside you, the fans and skaters are a friendly bunch who will help explain what’s going on.

CN Power closes out 2011

This past weekend CN Power travelled into the USA to play back-to-back bouts. On Saturday they travelled to Indianapolis to challenge the Naptown Roller Girls, currently ranked 3rd in the North Central region (ToRD’s region). They skated away with a loss, but put up a pretty good fight ending the bout down 67 to Naptown’s 266 points. It might look like a large point spread, but given the skill and experience of their opponents it shows that CN Power is well on their way to shaking up the division.
Check out some photos from the bout

On Sunday CN Power visited the Derby City Rollergirls of Louisville, Kentucky for their 2nd bout of the weekend. Derby City is currently ranked 20th in the North Central region. The skaters in pink were on fire as they laid waste to the Derby City skaters, winning that bout 295 – 28, and hopefully putting themselves on the ranking chart. They’ve been working hard in the last half of this year to put Toronto on the roller derby map!

Thus closes out the 2011 season for our travel team, and shortly ToRD will be going on a break to enjoy the merriment of the holidays.
